39. Staying overnight at work
Even though I had already moved my accommodation, driving to work
for more than half an hour, making it an hour round trip each day, made me feel
like it's a waste of time and gas. So, an interesting and feasible idea popped
into my mind. Since I had already lived in this car for three weeks, why not
try parking overnight in the vineyard? After all, the bathroom was already
there.
And toward the end, I often ended up
working alone because the others felt that hammering nails was too heavy task.
I could sympathize with the women too; they switched to other jobs, leaving
only me who didn't think of moving anywhere else. One reason was that I didn't
have much time left on my visa, and personally, I didn't think it was a
too-heavy job. It might seem boring to hammer nails repeatedly, but the
atmosphere amidst nature with cool weather helps each day pass without much
thought. I also had a method to save my strength; I switched hands when
hammering nails.
I am left-handed, so I started by hammering with my left hand.
After driving the nail in straight for about two strokes, I switched to my
right hand to continue hammering until the nail was fully embedded. By
alternating hands like this, I could work for a long time without my muscles
getting too fatigued. Of course, using my non-dominant hand at first required
some time to get used to, but with repeated practice, everything will fall into
place on its own.
I worked on hammering nails for over a week until the job was done.
During this period, I started secretly staying at the vineyard. Normally, I
might sleep at the garden for one or two nights, then drove to a backpacker for
one night to take a shower and prepare drinking water and food for the next
camping trip in the vineyard. At that time, it was good that it didn't rain
much, and since the weather wasn't too hot and the work didn't make me sweat, I
didn't feel the need to shower every day. On the contrary, sleeping in the
garden every night made me a bit excited as I could find ways to reduce costs,
and it also changed the atmosphere.
Sometimes I would
drive and park not far from the restroom in the garden for convenience in the
morning. Other times, I would park further away next to the garden by the
stream, which offered a different kind of beautiful view. Looking back at that
time, I might ask myself why I lived that way. But at that moment, it was an
exciting feeling to try something I thought was possible but had never
attempted due to various anxieties my mind had created. However, once I tried
it and realized I could do it, it was indeed a wonderful feeling.
In the meantime, I
started thinking of ways to sell this car because I only had one week left
before I had to fly.
