24. A three-car issue
And since I needed to move at that time, moving my residence along
with three other cars might sound like fun to someone who likes to do things
that others don't often do. With the help of this friend and that friend, and
with the country's extensive road system even in the village, finding parking
at my new home wasn't too difficult. I took my time, moving each car to my new
home, which was also owned by a Thai tenant, not too far from my previous home,
perhaps about seven kilometers apart if I were to estimate based on feeling. I
moved to the new place, but my lifestyle remained the same: I went to work and
saved money.
At this point, winter was almost over, and the grape pruning season
was coming to an end. My money, calculated from what I invested in the three
cars, is enough to make me feel good and relaxed. What I'd been hoping for and
wanting to spend time on was traveling again. However, this time it would be a
bit special because I would be traveling with my trusty campervan. I would
drive and stop wherever I want, as I please. You could even call this behavior
"wherever night falls, I'll sleep there," and it wouldn't be wrong.
But the important point that couldn't be forgotten was that I
needed to find a way to sell both cars so I didn't have to worry about anything
else. I started studying online shopping websites (including car sales),
looking at profiles of different people, trying to sign up as a member, and
posting for sale. Of course, I had to pay a service fee.
For both cars, I washed and polished them to keep them clean inside
and out when I had time, and then park them in areas where I thought people
might be interested, with price tags attached.
For the website, I only posted my friend's gray car because I
wanted to see how the system would work first, since there's a fee to post.
Also, I'd been with my first black car for a long time and I was confident
people would like it if they try driving it, so I was not too worried about
selling this one.
Additionally, I went around to various backpacker hostels
throughout the city to write small notes and stick them on the notice boards
that are usually provided. And of course, I also wrote notes and stuck them on
the boards in various shopping malls around the city. Then I waited with hope
and kept the car in good condition at all times.
And then one day, someone contacted me. They were interested in the
gray car. We set a date and time to go see the car. I would drive to their
house the next day. And the next morning, another call came in asking to see
the car as well. This online promotion was quite effective. I told the second
caller that I needed to let the first caller see the car and make a decision
first, as we had an appointment that afternoon. The second caller understood
and asked me to let them know the outcome.
That afternoon, I drove to the first line's house, following Google
Maps. But to be honest, I mostly used the screenshot method when I had Wi-Fi at
the accommodation, focusing on turns and street names. Sometimes I didn't want
to pay extra for internet because I rarely used it while working, and messaging
here was cheap and convenient.
This buyer was still a teenager. He said this will be his first
car. He called his neighbors and cousins to help him look at the car, which I
was happy to do when his brother wanted to test drive it. I showed him all the
car's repair history documents. After spending some time, they decided to buy
the car. I received cash from this young man and helped him with twenty dollars
for gas in exchange for driving me to the city where my car was parked. I
suggested he write the documents to confirm ownership if possible, and I would
also sign the documents as the seller and submit them to the post office.
After we parted ways, I went straight to the post office, signed
the documents showing the termination of ownership of the gray car, and
submitted them immediately. Then, I called the second person who had contacted
me that morning about the car and told him that I had already sold the gray
car. However, if he was interested in my other car, which was the black one, I
would be happy to show it to him. After talking back and forth, we found out
that we weren't far apart at all. He was at a bank just across the street.
After we greeted each other, I invited him and his girlfriend to
follow me to where the black car was parked. I immediately handed him the keys
to test drive the car, and I went with him. Even though he didn't drive very
far, he made a U-turn and said he was happy to buy the car. Before the test
drive, I had shown him all the vehicle inspection documents. From my
perspective as the seller, I felt very confident about this car, and that
confidence made the negotiation process natural and lively.
After he drove and parked in the same spot, he told his girlfriend
to drive home first. Then, I had him ride with me to the same bank where we
met. He went to the counter to withdraw the money and handed me the full amount
in cash, while I also gave him the keys to the black car. Then, I went to the
ATM and deposited all the money into my account for safety. After that, I asked
him to sign the documents certifying him as the new owner of the car.
At that moment, I remembered that there was another car key for the
black car at home, so I took him to my house to get the other key. Then, I
drove him to where the black car was parked. On the way, he asked me what I
would do after selling the car. I answered from the bottom of my heart that I
would travel in this sleeper car, visiting all the places I wanted to go with
freedom. It seemed that the answer I gave him was more like what I wanted to
tell myself.
After dropping him off at the black car, I said goodbye and wished
him luck with his new vehicle. We closed the deal successfully. I checked the
time and saw that there was still time before the post office closed, so I went
back to the original post office again and submitted the documents showing the
termination of ownership of the black car.
As I walked out of the post office, I felt truly relieved and
delighted that both cars were finally out of my care and had been transformed
back into numbers in an account. But it seemed that what helped me feel so good
was knowing that at least before my visa expired (which at that time was about
a month and a half away), it would be a time to use my available resources as
freely as possible, something I had dreamed of throughout the previous period
when I had worked so hard and endured so much. That feeling was truly
wonderful.
